GP Dermatologist, Campbell River

Dr. Gert Jacobs is a General Practice Dermatologist and the co-founder of Discovery Laser Skin Care Clinic. He splits his practice between medical aesthetics and referral-based, primary care dermatology, with a particular interest in pre-cancer screening, actinic keratosis, psoriasis, acne and eczema.

Dr. Jacobs grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Stellenbach 1994. While studying toward those degrees he met his wife, Therry, a cosmetologist with whom he would eventually open Discovery Laser Skin Care Clinic in Campbell River.

Long before that, however, when Dr. Jacobs finished his residency in Cape Town, he moved to England with Therry and worked throughout the country as a general practitioner and Emergency Doctor before returning to South Africa, where he worked as a GP for one more year.

In 1996, lured by a country that highly valued South African doctors and whose vast open spaces fascinated them, the couple moved to Canada and settled in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. Dr. Jacobs practiced as a GP in Nipawin for five years and attained his CCFP (Canadian Certification in Family Medicine) from the University of Alberta before the irresistible call of the ocean brought him and Therry, along with their new daughter, to Campbell River in 2002.

The birth of Discovery Laser Skin Care Clinic

Dr. Jacobs fell in love with Campbell River instantly, and he quickly built up a general practice serving his new neighbours in River City. His interest in laser technology for skin therapy, along with Therry’s diploma in Cosmetology, spurred the opening of Discovery Laser Skin Care Clinic in 2005. In 2014, Dr. Jacobs received his Diploma in Practical Dermatology (DPD) from the University of Cardiff in Wales.

Dr. Jacobs completed his Masters in Practical Dermatology in September 2016, making him one of only a handful of doctors in British Columbia with the MScPD designation.

In late 2015, Discovery Laser Skin Care Clinic moved to its current location at 902 Island Highway in downtown Campbell River. Here, Dr. Jacobs’ patients have access to the North Island’s most sophisticated laser technology and a team of top certified technicians and aestheticians – all within a relaxed, spa-like setting.
